Is Variety Really the Spice of Life? I am going to try answering this question, and more, by committing myself to having, (at least), one brand new experience a day for the next year! Through this experiment, I will be looking to see the ways that 365 days of novel experiences might change me and affect my life. This blog will tell the story of each of these experiences and will also document my observations, ponderings and thoughts. I invite you to join me in the discussion and the novelty!

Experiences

This page is meant to provide updates, instructions and/or resources for you to try any of the novel experiences I write about in my blog.  Just scroll to the day of the experiment you are interested in and information will be provided!  I hope that all my readers will try to add a little novelty to their lives!

here in Maine.

Day Eight:  Installing a Programmable Thermostat

Clearly I am not the expert here!  However, I would say buy the thermostat, make sure you have the tools and follow the instructions.  Solicit supervision if necessary!
Honeywell RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

Day Nine:  Tea Bath

Run a HOT bath and steep tea bag!
Deep Steep - Bath Tea Bags Grapefuit Bergamot, 6 tea bags

Day Ten:  Key Lime, (or Lemon-Lime) Cheesecake

Here is the recipe I used for the cheesecake.  I cheated and used a pre-made crust.  I HIGHLY recommend buying key lime juice rather than juicing  key limes by hand!

Day Eleven:  Cheesecake Tasting Party

Simple, really...  Invite people over contingent upon them providing a cheesecake as well as the method of obtaining/making it!  If you'd like the specific recipes used by my friends, please email me at noveltyexperiment@gmail.com

Day Twelve:  Wax Paper Place Mat
Oh, how I love ehow.com!  Here's the direct link!

Day Thirteen:  Craig's List Posting
Follow the instructions to create an account and listing at craigslist.org

Day Fourteen:  Willie Nelson's Texas Honky Tonk
To hear this channel you will need a subscription to Sirius XM radio - or be tuned to the right FM channel at the right place and right time!

Day Fifteen:  Energy Self Assessment
Write out a list of the typical activities you do during any given week.
Note whether each one is nurturing/energizing, neutral or draining
Reflect on the results and how you might make changes so that your energy is more balanced and stable.

Day Sixteen:  DIY Sugar Scrub
Here is a link to the instructions I used for my Sugar Scrub!  If you follow the slide show, there are directions for others as well!

Day Seventeen:  Red Cross Disaster Relief Donation
There are several ways that you can make a donation:  you can visit the  Red Cross website or you can text

"Redcross" to 90999 and have $10.00 billed to your cell phone account.

Day Eighteen:  Visiting the 1700 lb Chocolate Moose!
You can find this moose at Len Libby Candies at 419 US Route One, Scarborough, Maine.  Liam still asks if we are going to see the "chocolate moose" every time we get in the car!

Day Nineteen:  First Spontaneous "I Love You" From My Son!
I don't know if there is a "how to" for this one, but I wish it for all of you!

Day Twenty:  Picking a Bracket for College Basketball
Sign into Yahoo and pick a bracket here!

Day Twenty-One:  Teppanyaki Restaurant
I went to Kobe in Biddeford, ME...  However  Google search should help you find a Hibachi or Teppanyaki restaurant that is local to you!

Day Twenty-Two:  Polka Party
You can learn more about Gary Sredzienski here!  If you are local, you can hear it on WUNH.  If not, you can download the show on i-tunes, or  listen to it streaming live through the Internet.

Day Twenty-Three:  Guinness Float
I have been asked on my Facebook Page what the appropriate ice cream to Guinness ratio is...  Unfortunately, I just poured myself a pint and dumped a large scoop of vanilla ice cream into it without paying attention...

Day Twenty-Four:  Making Wire-Wrapped Sea Glass Pendants!
Sea glass can be found at many beaches here on the coast.  Here is the link for making  wire wrapped sea glass pendants.  I have since found the appropriate tools and materials in the craft section at Walmart and have continued to make pendants for fun!

Day Twenty-Five:  I Wax My Own Legs
I bought a waxing kit years ago at your normal, generic drugstore.  Follow the directions for whatever you buy!

Day Twenty-Six: Watching the Moonrise
This experience took research and planning.  First, a google search will help you to determine when the moon is going to rise in your area.  Next, find an Easterly facing point where you can see the horizon and plan to be there at that time.  It is also helpful to know the phase of the moon when planning this activity, as well as the cloud cover and weather forecast!  I definitely plan on doing this one again!

Day Twenty-Seven:  Using Speech to Text Software
I am using Dragon Naturally Speaking on my computer with a headset...  I'm finding the program to sometimes make my, (three year-old), computer buggy and need to continue trying to train it to my voice.  I'm also finding that I enjoy typing my blogs...  So, I'm continuing to evaluate!

Day Twenty-Eight:  Learning to Play Canasta
I learned how to play Canasta here.

Day Twenty-Nine:  I Sign Up For and Use StumbleUpon.com
You can try this website here.

Day Thirty:  Ben and Jerry's Late Night Snack!
You can find this at any grocery store with a good selection of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream!

Day Thirty-One:  Making a Character Cake
I made two white cakes; one smaller than the other.  I cut out two ears and a head from the smaller cake and assembled them on top of the larger cake.  I decorated the cake with white and chocolate buttercream frosting.  I cut a marshmallow in half to make the two eyes and put a chocolate drop on each to create eyeballs.  Brown M&Ms were used for nostrils.   I used a cake decorating tip to make the wool on Shaun's head.  Cupcakes could be used for feet if you wish, though I didn't.  For the cupcakes, I used a drop of green dye in a baggie of dried coconut to make the "grass."

Day Thirty-Two:  Candle Meditation, (With Baby).
I simply lit a candle, got into a meditation position and focused my attention on the flame and my breathing.  You can find different mantras and meditations on the internet.

Day Thirty-Three:  Maine Maple Sunday and Maple Sugar Cotton Candy
Maine Maple Sunday is an annual event and has counterparts in most New England states.

Day Thirty-Four:  Needle Felting
To learn more, go to eHow.com

Day Thirty-Five:  Instant Coffee
We bought Starbucks brand and followed the directions, but, of course, you can buy whatever you'd like at any grocery store and do the same!

Day Thirty-Six:  Calling the IRS/Baby's First Giggle
I can't tell you how to make a baby giggle for the first time!  But here is the number for the IRS:  1-800-829-1040.  My sympathies if you have to use it!
